Why Made In The US

If you’re a bike geek, you probably keep up with all the latest and greatest bikes. Do you remember  when they were all made by old craftsman in dusty old shops in Europe. DeRosa, Basso, Guerciotti, etc. At the time road bikes were steel and with the exception of some fillet brazed frames they were primarily made of lugged construction.

In the mid to late 80’s the US was experiencing the MTB boom and with it a cottage industry of US bike makers. They were unorthodox and using TIG welding to manufacture MTB frames which at the time was unheard of in the road bike community. But the process started to make it’s way to road bikes. The TIG process offered several advantages over lugged construction; builders weren’t restrained by tube diameter or shapes, and it also allowed use of different material such as aluminum and titanium.

By the mid 90’s all the bikes in the Pro Tour were aluminum, it was lighter and stiffer than steel, perfect for racing. With aluminum taking over the iconic brands, outsourcing to Asia began. Suddenly legendary brands we all sought after for decades were slowly losing their appeal. Then came carbon fiber.

Nowadays you won’t find a single bike in the Pro Peloton that’s not carbon fiber. As a matter a fact, with the exception of the rare bespoked craft built titanium and steel frame, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything but carbon fiber at your local group ride. And of all these carbon bikes, 99+ percent are made in just a handful of factories in China and Taiwan.

Pursuit Cycles is a different kind of bike company. We are born from bike makers and engineers. Our purpose for existing is to make one bike model a year in limited edition runs, here, in our shop, with our hands and to always get better. That is the whole point for us. We develop the designs, processes and determine quality control. Our frames are made with extreme care and attention to detail right here in Bozeman, Montana.

So while Pursuit Cycles are made in the USA, that’s not really the point. The point is, Pursuit Cycles are made by us. And it just happens that we are in the USA.
